Built a roadmap..
Of things I want to learn on every field I’m interested on, usually I consume every reading material at hand, at least with the roadmap I can see how every new reading contributes to the final goal.

Today...
1. Clouded skies. It seems rainy season finally decided to show up, two months behind schedule. Yesterday I woke up at the sound of rain on the parking lot’s tin roof, soothing music to my ears.
2. D’s impromptu visit. Traveling from Mexico to Panama just to say hello, guess I cannot beat that.
3. Losing my cellphone. Feeling the same peace I found when I got rid of my wristwatch decades ago. But now everyone is like crazy because they can get to me. I even was amonested by my boss because he couldn’t find me on saturday, which is plain ridiculous since is my personal cellphone and I don’t work on saturdays.
4. Doing it. Finally feeling my vegetative spell is going away, on friday I actually went to the gym, programmed a lot and finished two more books.
5. My go frugal goal. I need more space, my room feels crowded with all that computers and monitors, plus the dogs that now live “permanentley” inside my room since is the cooler one. I may get rid of the bed and install one of those sofas that you can make a bed so I can actually have an office to do work.

*Meditate more often, there’s too much noise going around because of unfinished things.
*Travel more within my country.

*Make proof of concepts in order to have a portfolio of expertises.

My town
Well, decided, I’ll write an article about the history of my town, San José de David, capital city of Chiriqui province all the way since being just an indian village when the spaniards arrived. Did a piece when I was at high school and I just found it the other day while decluttering my room.

Well, D spoiled the surprise, now mom is very excited. I wanted to go to D.F. but it’s too far away from Cancún to do a day trip.

Small steps
In order to complete the 2008 my best year yet goal I created a roadmap of things that must happen in order to mark that task completed. Decluttering my life is one of them, both the inside and the outside. My partner visited me past weekend, even when I tried to talk about my doubts that our “Long distance” relationship would work in the long term I discovered that much of the fear is coming from things I’d to sort out by myself. That’s in the internal, in the external I cancelled two credit cards, saving in order to cancel the last one, bought a more powerful laptop, cleaned my desk in order to have a place I would love to work on. I really hope to keep up, sometimes I just get sort of lazy, I’d my business registered but have no clue about what’s next, need to read some books on this and maybe get an accountant to help me on, I’d an idea of what marketing approach to use but my brother is more busy with his own company he has not much time to discuss strategies with me, well, let’s see.

The problem of doing this at home is...
That if I prepare pasta for two days I eventually ate the whole pasta the same day before going to bed :-P
Well, I went shopping yesterday buying all that spicy stuff that make small dishes taste good.

Now this is creepy...I should create a task on "43 weird things that happened to me"
It seems I’m not the only one, this is exactly like the stuff I’d been going trough past week.

Wondering what all that was about...
Been sort of introspective wondering where this sudden veil of darkness is coming from, for almost a week I’d a recurrent dream where I’m myself in the middle of a land almost black, where the only light seems to be a eerie gloom at the distance that allows me to see from time to time what looks like human forms black as coal moving between weird constructs or ruins of some sort, I approach them but I only can see black silouethes against the less darker background, they won’t answer my questions on how to reach the source of the light, some reach for me from odd angles and some touch me as if they were blind, when I try to touch them they would go away, I’m curious about it, not only because it has changed the usual pattern of my dreams but because there’s a lot of physical distress, I wake up tired and all hurt as if I were actually trekking a real place. Even tough I’m aware I’m inside a dream world the usual means to wake myself up when I’m within and things start to get nasty won’t work, but weirdly, I don’t mind, I don’t even try to wake up anymore, despite the sinister environment, I don’t feel threatened by the dark forms but as if they were mere being curious about why I’m there among them.
The house felt heavy those days, so much I went to sleep at E’s on monday, who was quite happy to have me around, the dream didn’t came to me that night, and I felt light and unusually happy and full of light, When I returned home, that night, the heaviness had gone, I found my hamsa broken on my desk, I remember what A told me about that when he gave it to me, sort of creepy. I’ll take it to a jeweler to see if it can be fixed.

non-violence
Osho wrote that Non-violence is not a principle to follow, but a consequence of mindfulness, if one is mindful one cannot be violent, thus, aggresive persons would mine our spirit if our convictions are not coming from our heart but from our mind, imposed by ourselves as a path we “want” to follow, a quite static path is that, and we forgot life is not a fixed path, but one that’s constantly changing, and when we find those bad apples on the humanity basket we do ourselves an them a favour by just flowing around them and going on.

Today
-My partner’s way of waking me up today
-The great breakfast that followed
-Realize I was on the verge of being prejudiced because of my neighbour complaint about myself having so many guests arriving at my house instead of putting myself in his place first.

Another manic friday...
On this goal:
Option A:
Make a traditional one
Found this video of Alice in Wonderland popup book is awesome
Option B:
Make a Digital one
Flash (Already know how to do the flip page effect)
For the 3D popup been thinking of some of the 3D libraries I’d found, still in their infancy but enough for what I want.
There’s actually a working algorithm to turn 2D pictures in 3D popup alikes Get to read the papers or try to reverse engineering it
Ideal would be pipe 2D image -> 3D popup geometry -> Render in Flash 3D apis -> Popup in effect -> Pop out Effect -> Flip Effect
So anyone would be able to build animated “books” feeding the pages images to the flash.
Hints:
“Mechanical books should look like ordinary books. Their success is to be measured by the ingenuity with which their bookish format conceals unbookish characteristics.”

Well..
It was a great experience but heavy, I got back home tired. Our nomina was one of the most voted, for some weird process had to make some deals with other groups so only 5 were choosen from ours, the elder ones. Well, it was overall a good experience, but not the sort of activism I was expecting, guess it would be more interesting as the major elections approaches.

Friends and Facebook
In less than two days I was back in touch with my friends from high school, it’s amazing to learn how their lives have blossomed, some have kids, a lot moved overseas, despite the age upon our shoulders as I write them and read their posts I couldn’t stop thinking of them as if I just hadn’t seen them since yesterday, even chuckling at the last joke we shared before we take our own separate ways.

Stars
I went late to my apartment complex gym, once there, tought of going for a swim. The water was way cold, I swam for 5 minutes and then just allowed the water to support my weight, tired and warm, the water no longer feeling cold, I got on my back and watched the night sky, just over my point of view was standing the Orion constellation, a man suspended in heaven and myself suspended in water, the weightlessness and the whole sky covering almost my entire field of view made me feel for an instant I was actually in space, I felt vertigo and lose my buoyancy after resurfacing got off the water with a big laugh and coughing.
A friend asked in his facebook page how many stars are in the sky, I was going to answer him 10 Teras, but then, a more obvious answer come to my mind: enough to makes us wonder. Not too few to not be interested on them, not too many to scare us.

Weird dreams...
Had one of the weirdest dreams with him, I'm not sure I can even catalog it as such, I could wake up, do stuff, go back to bed, and the dream would proceed from the point I opened my eyes and got up of bed.
It started with a nun and a pauper telling me someone needed to talk to me, we went down trough a manhole in the street to a filthy tunnel and then underwater to the point I started to run out of air and lose consciousness.
(First interruption)
We got out of the water, all wet and cold and got into El's lair, I'd not been there in ages. El was talking with someone, he looked at me and winked. The nun help me change my clothes while the pauper offered me tea.
I hadn't seen El in my dreams since we had that big argument when I was 14 I think, I barely recognized him, he looked decades older than me, well, he always was the eldest, he pointed to a couch while morphing himself into a younger version.
I couldn't see who he was talking, since the guy never turned back when we arrived, what an unpolite guy I thought and I realized it was me.
(Second interruption).
We huged for a while, he started asking me how I was doing, how was mom and grandma, work, it was odd.
"are you back for real or I'm dreaming this" I asked him.
"why, do you need me? " he replied sarcastically.
I fixed his tie, he got the dimple wrong.
"I had the weird sense I wasn't alone at home when I came back tonight, something just in the treshold of my sight, what where you doing in my room?" I said.
he just smiled.
"Looking around, quite a mess, you'll never change" he sighed.
"Now, You need to wake up, I'll tell you more tonight".
Everything turned white and El's face faded, he looks so much like me.
(Third Interruption). This time the sun hitting me in the face.
I was back at the street in front of the manhole, a nun was helping a pauper out of it, they smiled as if I were a stranger they just met an continued walking, the night was rainy and cold, the dream I was having when the nun intercepted me, continued...so I stopped it and wake up.
El ...when I was a kid was my first imaginary friend, my guardian demon...well, I don't believe in guardian demons and guardian angels anymore.

Thanks for diversity
this week I’m hosting trough the couchsurfing website a german, an eslovenian and a spaniard, three different people but very much alike, the greatest thing is being able to watch them interact, to share their findings, their dreams, their goals, the world is so big and at the same time so small, I try to ask minutiae about their home towns, the people there, then look in google earth and try to imagine how would have been growing there, it’s a personal perspective I enjoy having, if I can reach my goal that in every one of those corners of the earth there would be a human which path crossed with mine and that I was able to plant a small seed of friendship and nurturing trough the years I would be, as the little prince, to see the stars and see a well in every one of them.

Some days...
I wish I would have vacations of my dogs, but then I realize, the culprit is myself and taking them away is not the solution, is the easy way out. When you have kids you can’t send them out, when you commit to a wife, you can’t send her out, but people do, because there’s always an easy way at the first hints of trouble, well, I’ll walk with this small pebble in my shoes all the way, either my foot would learn to ignore it or the pebble would crust to nothing under my constant trailing. If I can’t with two beautiful dogs that only want to please me, how in heaven I’ll be able to deal with a family that would have their own demands.

Running for Delegate
Well, I signed up in the PRD a couple of years ago to help a friend that was running for the legislature, now got into a run for delegate, the dynamics of the group are quite interesting, there’s new people and very old people from the time of Torrijos. The meetings sometimes are quite odd but I’m learning a lot.

Outcomes...
It was great to have D visiting, also spending some quality time with my friends this weekend, just talking about nothing in particular, childhood memories, love, work.
My vacations this week were cancelled, that really got me, but then, it was the most likely outcome, however It's ok, all this weeks scheduled tasks were completed on sunday so I won't have to worry about that. However, it puts me in a crashing course with january's, I won't be able to do it, guess I'll had to redraw and write off it.

Today's small achievements...
Finished the Prep report. Learnt how the tables related to each other, it took me 5 minutes, David Allen was right on that, the fear of not having all that is required is what keeps you from starting.
*Finished my digital homing pigeon’s proof of concept, “CherAmi”. The idea (Wich I got at 5:00 am this morning as an excuse to skip the gym) was to send a direct message to cherami’s twitter and it would relay it to me via sms (other people had done it but my cell company doesn’t have a web gateway). Learnt to manipulate xml using *arghhh vbscript, Java for the server interface and curl for the twitter api.

Progress...
Water:
- Found a way to avoid the water keeping pouring after the timer turned off the bomb. The tank gets filled with two gallons of water, the setup looks awfull but I’ll work on the aesthetics next sunday, the mechanical timer I got has increments of 5 minutes, however the soil keeps moist with far less water than just pouring a whole jar on it. Sub-task 1 completed.
Sometimes I forget and leave open the shower out of habit, need to work on that.
*The pitcher advice worked well.
*Got a sponge based mop and ditched the strands based ones, it takes less water to rinse it.
*I’m doing the laundry once a week instead of every other day.
Gas:
Turned off the water heater. Only miss it in the morning :-(
Since I’m on a diet I’m not cooking big dishes, every dish I cook takes less than two minutes to get ready.
*Hanging instead of using the drying machine.
Electricty:
Being unable to find those motion sensing sockets for the lights.
Replaced all the incandescents bulbs at home by fluorescents less the one at the living room but I barely use the living at night anyways.
*Unpluggin any charger/electronics I’m not using.
*Tracking solar chargers for small electronics in town.
Gasoline:
Don’t own a car so no problem on that.
*Hiring cabs already with passengers. Using public transport or walk whenever I can. There are taxis using gas instead of gasoline out there, but they are the minority, thinking on making an arrangement with one to take me to work every morning and when I need to do errands out of public transportation routes.
Air Travel:
*None planned this year
The Carbon footprint calculator puts mine down average, that’s cool!!! Will mark this done.

A platform that looks solid enough for Timelines
I found Croquet quite by accident, I was trying to find if Squeak still thrived and found a link to the Croquet project. They have an SDK, it’s a 2D/3D platform and it looks very mature. Wonder if can be adapted to be the Timelines engine.

Need to make progress on this one...
Applied to four proyects trough the UN Online Volunteering Programme
Created a Google Calendar to handle the time devoted to volunteer work , will start with four hours a week and scale to 8 hours a week.
Would start reviewing the courses already in progress at PEOI to see where I can lend a hand and start plans to write and submit my own.
Compassionist asked me to organize a walk group for his next year’s project , would be great! Never done something like that, taking care of the organization and resources would be great and I’ll learn a lot.
A great service that the UN site has is the notion of groups, as a volunteer I can help those groups and as a group I can submit a request for help to the other volunteers, but to be a group It has to be registered in the country of origin. I’d enrolled a friend to help me with the paperwork stuff, a foundation of sorts, I’ll ask my neighbours at Nabuur about what’s the best way of doing it.

Cavafis, I dreamt once I was taking a stroll with him along the beach, outside Alexandria, I couldn’t understand what he asked me but I answered “It hasn’t changed”, we kept walking in silence.

Drupal
I always get to a point I start working and then waste 90% of my time doing sidelines, not the intentional task.
Removed Typo3 and decided to give it a try to Drupal, a lot of good stuff but it would require time to setup, get familiar with the template system and since I wasn’t able to do anything useful in less than an hour gave up on it.
One thing I liked of Drupal is that it has a module to create facebooks applications, I’ll schedule another hour to give it a try next weekend.

My experience with GTD
I use Jello Dashboard for the GTD flows in Outlook, sync to my Jornada and print a daily report into my paper notebook. Use Plaxo to sync between my PC at home, my PC at the Office and my Google Calendar.
GTD is a methodology easy to follow, no big complex rules, just common sense workflows, if you are technical oriented or a programmer, you’ll love it, indeed, you can implement it only with paper and pen if you want.
Get the audio book too. I put it from time to time to avoid the cubicle noise.

One of the most rewarding things...
I used to see myself as a Siberian Husky guy, but Corgis are another issue entirely, where my sibes use blunt force to get what they want, Alia is clever enough to see how to get it or trick me into doing it for her, I bet if she had more bigger fingers I’ll find her one day smoking like a 20’s diva and reading “Dangerous Liaisons”, yep, she’s mean, she’s smart and she’s gorgeous and she knows it.

Some setup...
Bought some construction paper and put a big piece at the wall in front of my bed, my intention is being able to see it everytime I wake up and work some time on the goals written there.
Today I’ve to show a preview.

Spanish...
My first friend was a Canadian boy called Jerry, I’d to learn english in order to communicate with him, I was eight then, my next friend I got when I was finishing high school, bye then, all my journals and inner talks where done in english those years, so, If I need to express something very deep, emotional, it’s hard for me to do it in spanish, since english was the language for that. I wish I could speak more about my feelings in spanish, since when I must, I just shut my mouth and say nothing, sometimes I can’t even find the words, had to use their counterparts.
Now, how I do that.

on 3:00AM cooking and Ratatouille Moments....
But as usual I’m too busy to find proper time. However, when I do have a “Ratatouille moment” (usually when hungry, after 3:00am while marathoning to finish a deliverable) I pull something from the net and try it. My favourite stop for it is the 101 cookbooks site
Would be titled something like :
3:00 A.M.
Cooking for programmers, slackers and workaholics
Sounds good! I can imagen the website interface: A big empty fridge and cabinet and a selection tool “What’s in your fridge?”, “What’s in your cabinet?”. You select what you have and the site returns a list of recipes ranked by easiness, time to deliver, filling score and what will do to your body at the time of cooking.
Now I’m wondering, either I’m manic (this is my 5 night in a row I’m full awake this early), the office’s new coffe is too strong (been skipping sleep since they changed the automatic machines) or is all that water I’m consuming (put a pitch of iced water next to my bed).
